Can you be too young or old for orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment for children can start at around 8 years of age.

There is no upper age limit for adults on getting orthodontic treatment.

What is a specialist orthodontist?

A specialist orthodontist is a dentist who has completed a clinical doctorate in orthodontics. Dr Caroline O Dwyer completed her studies in CUH, Cork.

Can a dentist straighten my teeth?

Dentists can straighten teeth but generally stick to simple aligner cases as they do not have the specialist training to deal with any issues that may arise during tooth movement.

How long will treatment last?

Treatment time is variable but a good rule of thumb is 10 -18 months. An accurate estimate will be given to you at your consultation.

How frequently are check ups?

Can you eat normally during treatment?

During your treatment you will be seen about every 6 weeks.

Is it necessary to still see my dentist during treatment?

Yes it is advisable to continue seeing your dentist during treatment as healthy teeth and gums are very important for specialist orthodontic treatment to progress without any issues.

Your first visit

How much is a consultation?

The current consultation charge is €100. This includes x2 – 30 minute meetings with Dr Caroline O Dwyer. 

1st meeting – full assessment of teeth including a 3D digital scan or xray . Photos of the patients teeth structures will be taken

What happens at the consultation?

First visit – Dr Caroline will get to know you, what your concerns are,, she will do a full assessment of your jaws and teeth, she will take scans of your teeth, take photos and any necessary x rays so that she has all the information needed to make the best treatment plan for you.

Second visit – after Caroline has studied the models, photos and x rays of your teeth, she will discuss all the treatment options with you, the length of treatment, the fee involved and answer any question that you may have.
